GREEN RIVER STONE COMPANY |
|||||
| GeoDecor’s C.E.O., Thomas E. Lindgren, owns several acres of the finest fossil quarry of the Green River Formation. It is composed of the sedimentary layers of the deepest part of Fossil Lake, an ancient Eocene lake in existence in Southwest Wyoming 45 to 50 million years ago. Now located 7,300 feet above sea level, the layers of sedimentary stone reveal the rich variety of life that thrived in and around the lake during the Eocene. The spectacular Green River Formation specimens are quarried by a specially trained team who remove the fossils by hand, according to scientific specifications. Each digging season, approximately May through October, yields a fascinating collection of finds, including a wide variety of fishes, as well as the more rare palm fronds, turtles, crocodiles, and birds.

The unique sedimentary layers of the quarry have been studied since the mid-1800's. Thomas Lindgren has continued this tradition, from his first involvement with the quarry in the 1980’s, by inviting select paleontologists and geologists into the quarry to conduct scientific research. GeoDecor’s methods of fossil excavation, using hand tools, are in keeping with standards agreed upon by the scientific community. Preparation standards also conform to current scientific parameters which are updated via Mr. Lindgren’s membership in the American Association of Paleontological Suppliers. Mr. Lindgren has donated fossils and artifacts from the quarry to the Fossil Butte National Monument, which educates visitors about the unique history of Fossil Lake and the Green River Formation, and to other educational institutions and museums in the United States and abroad.
