Holzmaden Sea Lilies Fossil
Unspecified

Crinoids, or "sea lillies," from Holzmaden, Germany are highly desired for their exceptional preservation. Subtly shimmering pyrite inclusions impart a glowing presence to these fossilized animals, which are plant-like in appearance. Also appealing is the richly colored black-brown shale matrix of this locality. Remains of animals from the warm, shallow Jurassic seas, in the region now known as Germany, reflect the warm environment of the Earth 180 – 170 million years ago. Holzmaden crinoids floated on pieces of driftwood (sometimes seen preserved with the crinoid specimens), filter-feeding in the warm Jurassic sea.
