The Posidonienschiefer, as German paleontologists call it, is known as a fossil lagerstatte - an accumulation of fossils representing an entire ecosystem within a specific prehistoric timeframe – the spectacular detail of the finest specimens are a result of the oxygen-deprived deep water marine environment and a fortuitous lack of predatory activity.
